Welcome to Sun Thief Press! We are an independent literary small-press run by a tight-knit group of friends in Providence, Rhode Island. While we give preference to translations when it comes to submitting full-length manuscripts, we also accept original English-language poetry and short fiction for the biannual Sun Thief Literary Journal.
We are interested in work that blurs boundaries between self and other, mind and world, writer and text. We value well-crafted, difficult work that interrogates and grapples with its own form and process, that deals in the experience of writing/living/being, along horizons, borders, between contraries, gulfs.
Please read our submission guidelines for more details on how to submit!
Sun Thief Press publishes 1-3 high-quality volumes of literary translation per year and one biannual literary journal released on the Winter and Summer solstices.

Sappho: A Translating
Translated by Grace Calk

Our first title is on its way!
We are in the production phase of our first title, Sappho: A Translating, by poet, translator, and Sun Thief co-founder Grace Calk.
Sappho: A Translating is a new and experimental translation of Sappho, an Ancient Greek poet. This unique collection meditates on the translator’s active relationship to the text and employs a pioneering new method Calk dubs “multiple translation.”
Multiple translation is the practice of translating and re-translating a single fragment many times, and presenting the many possible interpretations to the reader, all on the same page. It is a hermeneutical tool that deepens our understanding of the source material, delves into translation as a craft, and invites the reader to collaborate with the poet and translator. The translations themselves are interwoven with lyrical accounts of Calk’s experience as a translator of Sappho, reflecting the deeply personal connection forged between author and translator, even when separated by millennia.
Sun Thief Press is thrilled to be working on this project for its first print cycle and we look forward to bringing fresh attention to the enduring work of the Tenth Muse. Stay tuned for updates over the summer as we begin to roll out!
N.B: Sun Thief Press is in partnership with Translator’s House in Norwich, U.K., which is releasing Ms. Calk’s project this year in the United Kingdom.
